Schaubergwerk Leogang
Apart from copper, cobalt, nickel, mercury and lead, silver ore was mined in the Leogang mines and molten in village huts for the famous Salzburg silver thaler. The mineral-rich location of Salzburg holds 70 partly rare mineral types that are to gaze at in mineral cabinets.
Good Luck! Barbarastollen Leogang
Mining didn’t encourage only the economy. Through the moving in of miners and experts, new spirits came to the land, and they were not taken lightly, such as Protestantism. The Hyberstube on the first floor of the museum reminds of the emigration of 1731/32 and, most of all, the leader of the Lutherists from our region.
A further exhibition focus is the multifaceted businesses of the miners, visually documenting the hard work in the tunnel complex.
The searching, finding and extracting of minerals were extremely dangerous and connected with a heavy burden on the body. The miners’ deep religiosity and the justified reverence of saints offered an important stop.
The patron saints can now be seen in an exceptional exhibition: „The mining saints in the Alp region“.
Precious and artistic high-quality gothic sculptures of prominent alpine mining saints can be admired in the “Leogang Treasury”. Amongst them are St. Barbara, St. Christopher and St. Anna.
The fascinating expression of the saints captivates the observer and opens him the world of the miners’ thoughts and fears, calling for protection and blessing in their prayers…
The exhibition mine abducts you for over an hour in the realm of minerals – in the realm of medieval mining, and provides an impressive testimony of miners’ hard work. The miner’s tavern at the entrance of the mine invites you in after a visit of the tunnel complex.
