Burg Mauterndorf - Mauterndorf Castle
Mauterndorf Castle is located in Lungau, in the southern district of the Salzburg state.
The Salzburg archbishops were already fascinated by this exceptional natural countryside, and therefore Mauterndorf Castle occasionally served as a summer residence.
Mauterndorf Castle
A central north-south trade route leading through the Upper Tauern and along the current site “Mauterndorf” already existed during Roman times. The Mauterndorf Castle was built by the Salzburg chapter on the previous toll station in the 13th century for the protection of the market community. The cathedral provost Burkhard von Weißpriachand and Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach expanded the castle complex in the 15th century. As the castle’s ownership was transferred to the government in 1806, it was still owned by the chapter and functioned as its administration centre. It was threatened by deterioration since the beginning of the 19th century, so it was purchased by Dr. Hermann von Eppenstein, a wealthy military doctor from Berlin, in 1894 and rebuilt with great effort.
The state of Salzburg acquired the castle complex of Mauterndorf for the Austrian Republic in 1968. The Mauterndorf Castle, the historical building, was renovated from 1979 till 1982 and cost 20 million Schillings.
Nowadays, the Mauterndorf Castle presents itself as an impressive historical building with a rich historical past. The vaults, halls and apartments of the castle are today used as the countryside museum for Lungau, experience exhibition “Lust for the Middle Ages” (a time travel based on the 15 century), restaurant and culture centre.
